3. How do I become a craft instructor?
Everyone is busy these days. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to do all that we want to do, as well as that which everyone else wants us to do. Because of the business of the times, we have to be careful to prioritize and choose to do the things that will reap the greatest benefits. Becoming an instructor in the ABC Craft Training & Apprenticeship program qualifies as one of those activities that reaps high benefits.
Consider the following advantages of becoming a craft instructor:
- Help shape future leaders in the industry
The men and women who are participating in the ABC Craft Training Program are the future leaders of our industry. They are acquiring the skills and knowledge that will enable them to move to the forefront of the industry. - Help mould the construction industry.
Our instructors have a great amount of influence in shaping the attitudes, skill level, knowledge and understanding of these future leaders. The belief system and professional level of these trainees is being sculpted, and will reflect the beliefs and professionalism of their instructors in the years to come. - Impact the life of a young craft worker.
Craft instructors can make a significant impact on the lives of trainees through the example which they set forth. Many of us can look back and point to a specific teacher who made a big difference in our lives. You can make that kind of a difference! - Position your employer as a leader and pacesetter.
When you are involved in training the new workforce, you are representing your company. The expertise and workmanship that you demonstrate to your class will carry over in their minds as the qualities that embody your company. - Pride and Satisfaction.
There is a great satisfaction that comes from knowing that you have helped new craft workers understand the things they need to know to be successful in their field. They will long remember you for what you enabled them to understand.

4. Is the program Certified?
Our programs are certified by the United States Department of Labour Bureau of apprenticeship and Training (US DOL BAT). Apprentices who complete the program will receive certification from the US DOL BAT, as well as certification from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). NCCER is the educational affiliate of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). They provide the standardized curricula for the sponsored training programs throughout the United States. NCCER’s standardized programs include certification of instructors and accreditation of students. There is a standard system for national, industry-wide recognition. Through the accredited training programs of NCCER, apprentices can learn the skills and gain the official recognition they need to soar to the top. Several Universities apply ABC Apprenticeship Training credit toward a degree program. Contact us for more details.

Apprenticeship…The OTHER four year degree...
Apprenticheship Offers Many Benefits:
- Apprenticeship-level pay from the employer
normally starts out at about half the average craft professional, employed by the same company, and increases regularly throughout the apprenticeship. Upon completion of the formal training period, the apprentice will receive wages of a skilled craft professional.
On-the-job training under proper supervision,
an apprentice will work and learn from an experienced individual known as a "journey person" or "craft professional" to earn journey-level status upon successful completion of the training. Over time, an apprentice learns every aspect of the craft and performs the work under less supervision. Each hour of OJT experience is recorded as a permanent record of achievement. - Related technical/classroom instruction
generally takes place in a classroom or shop and covers techniques of the craft as well as the technical theory. Skilled craft professionals and other industry professionals teach classes that may be scheduled during the day or in the evening. - Specified length of apprenticeship
for most crafts are four-level programs, but some are two, three or five levels. Opportunities begin as early as the 10th or 11th grade and continue after high school for people transitioning through career changes.

Are you looking to start a career but do not know where to begin. Here’s you’re beginning to new an exciting career in construction!
ABC Heart of America conducts statewide outreach to create a pool of applicants for each of the available trades. Applicants attend an orientation where we explain the ABC program in more detail then are scheduled for an interview. The interviews are conducted by Education Committee Appointed representatives. Applicants are scored based on their interview points and the points they receive for documents turned in with their application e.g. transcripts (college & H.S.), DD214, DMV printout, and additional documentation e.g. first aid/CPR, Eagle Scout. Upon completion of the interview will be placed on the list of qualified applicants for each geographic pool they indicated on their application form.
Upon receiving a request for placement from a participating employer, qualified applicants will be contacted based on their qualifying score and geographic pool. Applicants are given 48 hours to respond to the request for placement. Employers will indicate their intent to hire/indenture via a referral follow-up.
Once employment is secured, the applicant will be indentured by ABC Heart of America with USDOL. Apprentices will complete class testing at the ABC School or with the employer and turn in monthly work reports to document on-the-job learning hours.
A performance report will be sent to the employer electronically once a month which will indicate the apprentices' hours, testing and pay percentage. Apprentices not in good standing will receive disciplinary notices and, if necessary, will be removed from the program.
Employers will complete an exit survey on any apprentice that is leaving their employ for any reason. The exit survey will indicate the apprentice's potential for future apprenticeship opportunities. Apprentices with good exit surveys and will be re-placed back into the pool for future opportunities. Apprentices not in good standing will be brought before the Education Committee for evaluation and either placed in the laid off pool or cancelled from the program.
